The 3 litre container is usually large enough for the 24-hours urine collection for more than 90 % of patients. The 2 litre container is usually suitable for 60 % of patients.
The clear strip is used as a viewing window with a scale to easily and accurately determine the collection amount. The 3 litre container and the UriSet 24 can therefore be hygienically and easily read from the outside.
Catecholamine, metanephrine, vanillylmandelic acid, homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid are optimally stabilised by hydrochloric acid for up to 7 days.
The stabiliser in the UriSet 24 is 20% hydrochloric acid (9 ml).
After collecting the sample and establishing the volume collected, the urine can be transferred to a Urine Monovette® or transport tube. These sample tubes included in the complete set enable sample transport in accordance with P650 and also increase sample stability through light protection.
The urine cup with integrated transfer device can contain 100 ml.
The urine collection containers are made of polyethylene (PE). PE has a high resistance to chemicals. Diluted acids, alkalis, alcohol, oil and water and saline solutions do not affect PE. Concentrated, oxidising acids, such as nitric acid and halogens, have a corrosive effect.
After cleaning the external genitalia and after urinating for approximately 3 seconds, about 10–20 ml of urine is collected in a sterile container without interrupting the urine stream. Impurities are avoided in this way. Once the designated sample volume has been collected, the remaining urine can be released into the lavatory.
Mid-stream urine is particularly important for microbiological tests.
24-hour urine collection eliminates concentration fluctuations occurring throughout the day. It is therefore suitable for safely and reliably determining parameters which are subject to concentration fluctuations (circardian rhythm), such as catecholamine or creatinine clearance.
Collecting 24-hour urine starts by emptying the bladder in the lavatory. This time must be noted (e.g. 7 a.m.).
The next bladder emptying must be transferred to the collection container and, if necessary, the stabiliser is added (do not forget to mix).
Each subsequent urination must be collected until the following day. The collection stops from the time that was noted on the previous day (e.g. 7 a.m.). The bladder should be emptied shortly before in order to add this sample to the amount collected.
